THE BBC has revealed that it prepared an amazing montage in preparation for England’s incredible last-minute win in the final that never happened.
The collection of clips, beautifully edited to Coldplay’s Higher Power, would have reduced you to tears of euphoric joy, single-handedly restored national pride and healed your relationship with your father but will now never be shown.
BBC editor Jack Browne said: “I was just waiting for the final goal to finish it off. Sadly it was scored by Mikel Oyarzabal.
“Even by our high standards the montage was quite something. Fade in on the Lions walking onto the pitch, black-and-white, with Charles Dance reciting Shakespeare. Then a second of Palmer’s goal as it bursts into colour, then smash cut to Geoff Hurst scoring in ‘66.
“Clips of Southgate missing his penalty, the heartbreak of 2021, Southgate as manager, then building through this tournament to the triumph of the final. Which, sadly for my artistry, didn’t happen.
“You would have been in bits, I promise you. By comparison the London 2012 opening ceremony looked like a piece of shit. Still, may as well just delete the whole thing.”
He added: “Maybe I’ll watch it again.”
